Sam Walton wrote this autobiography with journalist John Huey in the last months of his life, and it was published in 1992, the year he died. It traces his path from running a Ben Franklin variety store in Newport, Arkansas, to opening the first Walmart in 1962 and building it into the country’s biggest retailer. The book is plainspoken and full of practical habits: obsess over the customer, keep costs low, borrow good ideas from competitors, listen to the people working in the stores, and share the rewards with them. It ends with his ten rules for building a business.
